Heavy Duty 72 Cell Seedling Plug Tray

72 Cells, 9 rows of 8, bottom watering tray and drainage tray included, made in Melbourne out of 100% recycled plastic. Seedling plug tray measures 26cm wide, 31cm long, 5cm deep with each seedling plug sell measuring 2.7cms each way at the top, tapering down to 1cm width at the base, with a 5mm diameter circular drainage hole at the base of each seedling plug. The two base trays measure 27cms wide x 31cm long at their widest points.
This durable and professional quality seed raising system is made in Melbourne, Australia out of 100% recycled PP5 plastic, which is non-toxic, food-safe, long lasting and recyclable at PP5 drop off points.
These seed raising trays are an adaption of the full-sized 198 cell seedling plug trays, which are designed for professional large-scale nurseries. Unfortunately most seedling trays made small enough to be used by home growers and community gardeners are are thin, flimsy and designed to break so you'll buy more of them. That's the opposite of what we want. If you buy this once and never have to buy another one again, we'll have done our job well. Just return the favour by telling your friends and family about us!
Each seedling plug tray has been re-sized by hand by our founder Christie Cooper so they're the perfect fit with the rest of our modular seed-raising and growing products, including the bottom watering tray and the drainage tray that come with this kit. Both layers are critical - the tray with holes ensures your soil drains well and minimises the risk of fungus gnat infestations (they breed in soil that's too wet) The base tray without holes catches the drips if growing indoors, and allows for bottom watering and bottom feeding if you're growing outdoors.

Best soil for seedling plug trays

We recommend using the Growing Healthier Futures seedling-plug soil mix with these trays. As the plug sizes are so small, ordinary soil will dry out too quickly.

If you'd like to make your own, we recommend the following seedling plug soil recipe:

  • 9 parts sifted coco-peat
  • 1 part vermiculite
  • 1 part perlite
  • 1 part propagating sand
  • 1 part worm castings

Feeding your seedlings

Seeds are packed full of nutrients to feed young seedlings for their first couple of weeks of life. But, then they need some help.

Once seedlings are around 5cms tall, they'll need a twice-weekly boost of either diluted liquid fertiliser or diluted worm-tea, or they'll need to be transplanted into bigger spaces with added compost.

A practical, reusable and upcycled seedling plug tray for seed raising, propagation, herbs, flowers, cuttings and trial crops.

Why Seedling Plug Trays Work

Each cell gives seedlings their own growing space, helping young plants develop stronger roots before transplanting into the garden, pots, raised beds or hydroponic systems.

Subtle raised lines within each seedling cell help train the roots to grow down, preventing seedlings from becoming root-bound.

The tapered cell design supports healthy seedling plug formation, while the drainage base helps excess water move through the tray.
