Give your Australian native seeds the natural fire cues they need to germinate.
Our Smoke-Infused Coco Coir contains naturally occurring Karrikins ("Smoke Chemicals") and is specially developed to improve the germination of many Australian native species that naturally respond to the bushfire smoke.
Simply apply a thin layer of this ready-to-use smoke-infused coco coir over your seed raising mix before sowing seeds.
Many iconic Australian native plants, including selected Grevillea, Banksia, Hakea, and some Acacia have evolved to germinate after fire. The naturally occurring compounds found in smoke signal that conditions are ideal for seedlings to establish. Our Smoke-Infused Coco Coir delivers these cues in an easy, clean and convenient format.
Roughly 500ml per bag.
For best results, soak seeds first with our liquid smoke treatment.
Benefits
- Ready to use—no mixing or diluting required
- Provides smoke germination cues (Karrakins) for smoke-responsive Australian native seeds
- Easy to apply as a thin surface layer
- Helps retain moisture around newly sown seeds
- Made from renewable coco coir
- Ideal for seed trays, tubes and pots
How to Use
- Fill your seed tray or pot with a quality seed raising mix.
- Apply a thin layer (approximately 2–5 mm) of Smoke-Infused Coco Coir over the surface.
- Sow your Australian native seeds according to the recommended depth for each species. For hard-to-germinate smoke receptive seeds, soak first in Growing Healthier Futures liquid smoke treatment.
- Lightly cover the seeds with Smoke Infused coco-coir if required. If your seeds require light to germinate, do not cover.
- Water gently using a fine mist spray or water from the bottom to prevent seeds from moving during the watering process.
- Keep the growing medium evenly moist while seeds germinate.
Suitable For
Smoke-responsive Australian native species, including many:
- Grevilleas
- Banksias
- Hakeas
- Boronias
- Other Australian native plants that benefit from smoke treatment
Always check the germination requirements of individual species, as not all Australian native seeds require smoke treatment and some require heat.
Smoke chemicals: "Karrikins"
The smoke compounds that stimulate germination in certain species are collectively known as smoke-derived germination chemicals. The most important group is called karrikins.
- Scientific name: Karrikins
- Named after the Noongar Aboriginal word "karrik", meaning smoke.
- They are produced when plant material burns.
- They trigger germination in hundreds of fire-adapted species, including many Australian natives.
Storage
Store sealed in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight. Reseal after opening to maintain quality.
